Each time a TV is watched, a call ismade, or a PC or tablet is utilized, benefits ofcomputer innovations are being utilized. The mechanical utilization of PCs is an incredible apparatus to have whenever utilized appropriately, viably and securely. PCs are found all over the place. As our general public twists towards being a culture associated through the Internet, an ever increasing number of PCs have been bought by families for their homes and kids are starting to figure out how to utilize the PC at a previous age. Regardless of whether PCs are not as of now accessible at a home, a kid will more likely than not be offered access to one at a school or library. From an inspirational viewpoint, PCs furnish us with a stunning measure of assets and data, and as a human race have made us essentially more brilliant. Autonomously, it has made us progressively learned in light of the fact that we can easily discover the data we need, in spite of the fact that then again, if the web were to be removed, we may turn out to be less savvy. As people become increasingly associated, we would have more capacities and the web would have every one of us abnormal to one bigger mind that is more intelligent than any single person. The Effect of Facebook Use on Family Relationships - 275 Words
The Effect of Facebook Use on Family Relationships (Dissertation Sample) Content: SECTION 4. Discussion/Application/ ConclusionDiscussionFindings from the survey of Facebook users (N=364) on the role Facebook plays in relationship indicate that Facebook users engage in a variety of reasons for staying connected on the site (see the full survey results attached in Appendix A). See Table 1 below for the most common role Facebook plays in a relationship with a family member.Table 1: Common role Facebook plays in a relationship with a family member from the survey Items No. of Responses1: Facebook is a convenient way to stay in touch with (persons name). 582: Facebook keeps me up to date on (persons name)'s life. 423: Because of Facebook, I feel like I know what's going on in (persons 39name)'s life.4: Facebook makes it easy for me to keep in touch with (persons name). 245: Because of Facebook, I feel like I know what (persons name) hasbeen up to, even when we haven' t interacted in a while. 236: Facebook makes me feel closer to (persons name). 177: Facebook has positively impacted my relationship with (persons name). 158: Facebook helps me understand (persons name) better. 199: Interacting with (persons name) through Facebook makes me feel like I know him/her better. 2910: Being Facebook Friends with (persons name) has improved our relationship. 59____________________________________________________________________________Most participant`s indicated the most reasons for using Facebook is for relationship maintenance purposes. For example, one of the participants said she used the Facebook site to reconnect with old friends and keep in touch, socially surveill (through passive consumption of content), and communicate with others. Consequently, most users reasons for using the site shouldto some extentreflect relationship maintena nce identified in previous research in offline (Stafford, 2010) and online (Rabby, 2007) contexts. The findings from the survey suggest that close relationships do not benefit the most from being connected on the site; rather, those who primarily rely on Facebook to interact, those who live at a greater physical distance from each other, and weaker ties see the site as having the greatest positive impact on the quality of their relationship. In this way, while Facebook may serve a supplemental role for closer relationshipssimilar to Hampton and Wellmans (2001) findings about email more than a decade agofindings suggest the site may actually serve to enhance the quality of weaker relationships and prevent those connections from fading away completely.First, when considering Facebooks potential impact on relationship processes, researchers have recently suggested that social media contain a unique set of affordances that differentiate them from other forms of FMC (Boyd, 2010; Treem L eonardi, 2012). For example, interactions between Friends on FB may be visible to a users entire Friend network and persist long after that interaction takes placeand can be added to and updated at a later time. Furthermore, connections on these sites are formally associated through Friending, while all content users create and post are associated to their names. Consequently, the highly persistent, visible, and connected nature of interaction on FB likely impacts relationship maintenance practices; for example, in studying teens FB practices, Boyd and Marwick (2011) identified a set of strategies teens employed on Facebook and other social media sites to maintain privacy while sharing content with the public and/or their other connections on the site. Finally, when studying interactions facilitated through FBwhich are largely based on quick and convenient communication rather than the lengthy, more complex interaction patterns associated with in-depth disclosuresresearchers must be gin to expand their conceptualization of what kinds of behaviors constitute relationship maintenance. For example, Liking is the most frequently performed behavior by Facebook users (Hampton et al., 2011), most likely because of the low effort in time and cognition associated with clicking the Like button on a Friends status, link, video, or photo. Tong and Walther (2011) note that these kinds of behaviors are reminiscent of the passing of virtual tokens between two relational partners and could be comparableto some extentto engaging in a shared activity, which has long been identified as a primary form of relationship maintenance.Second, when considering relationship maintenance research broadly, studies haveconsistently relied on samples of close-tie relationships and measureslike Stafford and Canarys (1991) Relationship Maintenance Strategy Measurethat are biased towardgeographically proximate dyads. In the framework of close ties such as spouses, the focus ofmuch of the initial research, measures that assessed the extent to which partners sharedhousework and interacted with each others family made sense; however, these same measureshave continued to be applied in subsequent years, both among non-intimate dyads and in onlinesettings, raising questions about the validity of some of the items. For example, in his study ofindividuals who maintained primarily and exclusively Internet-based relationships, Wright(2004) found that a significant proportion of people listed a strategy other than one of Staffordand Canarys (1991) as the most important strategy for maintaining their relationship. With FB,these measures may be even less inappropriate, considering the average users Friend network in the U.S. contains 229 connections (Hampton et al., 2011). Considering the number ofmeaningful relationships individuals can cognitively maintain (Dunbar, 1995), this means thatthe site is potentially being used to maintain a much larger percentage of weaker ties thanstronger ties. Therefore, measures structured to reflect strong-tie relationships would seeminsufficient. Furthermore, as with any form of FMC, a benefit of Facebook is that it removesgeographic constraints to relationship maintenance; therefore, measures structured to reflectgeographic proximity would also seem insufficient.ApplicationThis term paper contributes to existing research on family and consumer science (FMC) in two important and distinct ways. First, it extends our understanding of the role social network sites such as Facebook play in relationship. Second, it directly addresses two challenges FMC researchers have faced when measuring relationshipand acknowledges that these technologies enable people to maintain a variety of relationships in new ways because of the technical structure of the sites and the lowered transaction costs to interaction. As we move forward in this area of research, it is essential that researchers acknowledge the affordances of technology and consider how individuals may be using specific features of technologywhether it is the asynchronous nature of email or the view-when-you-like component of passive consumption on social network sites to manage both close connections as well as ties that may have otherwise faded away without technology. With these factors in mind, the term paper explored the development of Facebook-specific relationship maintenance strategies: Supportive Communication, Shared Interests, Social Information Seeking, and Passive Consumption. These relationship strategies both reflect the long tradition of scholarship on relationship maintenance and acknowledge the unique ways in which relationships can be maintained through the site. While three strategies identified through this analysis are non-medium specific, the fourth, Passive Consumption, reflects behaviors almost exclusively afforded by technologyas one could argue that a person could passively consume information about another by observing them at a loca l restaurant or park (an uncertainty reduction strategy noted by Berger Bradac, 1982). Passive strategies were also identified as one of four online information-seeking strategies in research by Ramirez, Walther, Burgoon, and Sunnafrank (2002); in their work, the focus was on information that could be drawn about another through mediated channels without that persons knowledge, such as being blind-carbon copied on an email or lurking on a message board.ConclusionThis research concludes that existing research on computer mediated communication impacts relationship maintenance in two important and distinct ways. First, it extends our understanding of the role newer communication technologies such as Facebook plays in the relationship maintenance process. Second, it directly addresses two challenges computer mediated communication researchers have faced when measuring relationship maintenancethe focus on strong tie relationships and strategies requiring proximityand acknowledges tha t these technologies enable people to maintain a variety of relationships in new ways because of the technical structure of the sites and the lowered transaction costs to interaction. It is also expected that the affordances of the technology (Boyd, 2010; Treem Leonardi, 2012) enable users to engage in maintenance behaviors that were previously more difficult or not possible without the technology. Researchers have noted that Facebook reduces the temporal and spatial constraints to communication (Boyd, 2008; Rabby, ...

U.S. Median Age Highest Ever
The ââ¬Å"aging of Americaâ⬠continued as the U.S. median age increased to a new historic high of 38.2 years in 2018, up from 37.2 years in 2010, according to the 2018 Population Estimates by demographic characteristics for the nation from U.S. Census Bureau. By median age, the Census Bureau means that half of the American people are now older and half younger than 38.2 years. The median age for females is 39.4 years and 36.8 years for males, while overall life expectancy has reached 80.1 years. From 2010 to 2018, the U.S. populationââ¬â¢s median age increased by 1.0 years. Among the different race groups: The white alone-or-in-combination population increased by 1.0 years. The black or African American alone-or-in-combination population grew by 1.4 years. The American Indian and Alaska Native alone-or-in-combination population increased by 2.2 years. The Asian alone-or-in-combination population increased by 1.7 years. The Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone-or-in-combination population increased by 2.6 years. The Hispanic (any race) population experienced an increase in median age of 2.2 years. North Dakota was the only state to see a decline in its median age, from 37.0 years in 2010 to 35.2 in 2018. Maine continued as the state with the highest median age, going from 42.7 years in 2010 to 44.9 years in 2018. Utah, at just 31.0 years, had the nationââ¬â¢s lowest median age in 2018. ââ¬Å"The nation is aging ââ¬â more than 4 out of every 5 counties were older in 2018 than in 2010. This aging is driven in large part by baby boomers crossing over the 65-year-old mark. Now, half of the U.S. population is over the age of 38.2,â⬠said Luke Rogers, the Chief of the Population Estimates Branch at the Census Bureau. ââ¬Å"Along with this general aging trend, we also see variation among race and ethnicity groups both in growth patterns and aging.â⬠Between 2000 and 2010, the population 45 to 64 years old grew 31.5% to 81.5 million. This age group now makes up 26.4% of the total U.S. population. The large growth among 45- to 64-year-olds is primarily because of the aging of the baby boom population. The 65-and-older population also grew faster than most younger population groups at a rate of 15.1% to 40.3 million people, or 13.0% of the total population. While attributing the jump to aging baby boomers, Census Bureau analysts noted that the 65-and-over population actually increased at a slower rate than the overall population for the first time in the history of the census. Baby boomers are considered to be persons born from 1946 to 1964. According to the Census Bureau, the average retirement age in the U.S. is 62, with the average life expectancy after retirement is 18 years. However, as the U.S. Social Security Administration advises, actually starting to draw Social Security retirement benefits at age 62, rather than waiting until your full retirement age comes with risks and rewards. While the median age increased by nearly two and a half years between 1990 and 2000, said Campbell Gibson, a senior Census Bureau demographer, the growth of the population aged 65-and-over was by far the lowest recorded rate of growth in any decade for this age group. The slower growth of the population 65 and over, Gibson said, reflects the relatively low number of people reaching 65 during the past decade because of the relatively low number of births in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The increase in median age from 32.9 years in 1990 to 35.3 in 2000 reflects a 4-percent drop in the number of persons between 18 to 34 years old combined with a 28-percent increase in the population between 35 to 64 years of age. The most rapid increase in size of any age group in the profile was the 49 percent jump in the population 45-to-54-years-old. This increase, to 37.7 million in 2000, was fueled mainly by the entry into this age group of the first of the baby boom generation. Besides data on age, the U.S. profile contains data on sex, household relationship and household type, housing units, and renters and homeowners. It also includes the first population totals for selected groups of Asian, Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, and Hispanic or Latino populations. The findings above are from a Census 2000 profile of the U.S. population, released May 15, 2001. Here are more highlights from Census 2000: The number of males (138.1 million) edged closer to the number of females (143.4 million), raising the sex ratio (males per 100 females) from 95.1 in 1990 to 96.3 in 2000.The nations housing units numbered 115.9 million, an increase of 13.6 million from 1990.The average household size in 2000 was 2.59, down slightly from 2.63 in 1990.Of the 105.5 million occupied housing units in 2000, 69.8 million were occupied by owners and 35.7 million by renters; the homeownership rate increased from 64 percent to 66 percent. The number of non-family households rose at twice the rate of family households 23 percent versus 11 percent.Families maintained by women with no husband present increased three times as fast as married-couple families 21 percent versus 7 percent. Married-couple families dropped from 55 percent to 52 percent of all households.A nation of loaners? In 1940, less than 8 percent of all Americans lived alone. Today, almost 26 percent live by themselves.

Distance Learning Essay - 1627 Words
Distance Learning Distance education can trace its roots to 1840 when Sir Isaac Pitman, the English inventor of shorthand, came up with an idea for delivering instruction to a potentially limitless audience: correspondence courses by mail. By the 1900s, the first department of correspondence teaching was established at the University of Chicago. The founding of the United Kingdomââ¬â¢s Open University in 1969 marked a significant development of the newest phase of distance learning involving a mixed-media approach to teaching (Matthews 1999). Distance education takes place when a teacher and student are separated by physical distance and technology (in the form of print, voice, video and/or data) is used to bridge theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Despite the large volume of written material concentrating on distance learning, the amount of original research is quite limited. A closer look at the research that exists suggests that one should be cautious in accepting these findings at face value. The most significant problem is that the overall quality of the original research is questionable and renders many of the findings inconclusive (Merisotis Phipps 1999). There are four shortcomings of the original research: Much of the research does not control for extraneous variables and therefore cannot show cause and effect. Most of the studies do not use randomly selected subjects. The validity and reliability of the instruments used to measure student outcomes and attitudes are questionable. Many studies do not adequately control for the feelings and attitudes of the students and faculty ââ¬â what educational research refers to as reactive effects. (Ibid.) A report from the Institute for Higher Education Policy also argues that the many articles and papers published on distance education arenââ¬â¢t as useful as they could be. The Institute claims that distance education research often fails to use randomly selected subjects; it focuses too heavily on individual courses rather than the effectiveness of entire academic programs delivered via technology; and it pays too little attention to whether the limitations of virtual libraries constrict the academic direction ofShow MoreRelatedEssay on Distance Learning1410 Words à |à 6 PagesDistance Learning In recent years, there has been a trend in the way that many major institutions of higher learning have been teaching their students. The Metamorphosis of Johnny Tremain Tremain Essay Example For Students
The Metamorphosis of Johnny Tremain Tremain Essay The Metamorphosis of Johnny Tremain Johnny Tremain is like a butterfly; he went through a transformation. Johnny Tremain is a book by Esther Forbes about a crippled boy during the American Revolution and the events he endures. Johnny Tremain was a very dynamic character because people and events affected him. People change main characters in many books. Johnny Tremain is no exception. In Johnnys case it was the Lyte and the Lapham families. Both the Lapham family and the Lyte family probably did not mean to change Johnny, but they did. Johnny was orphaned after his mother died but was able to stay in the Laphams house and to be an apprentice to Mr. Lapham, an elderly silver smith who educated Johnny in this art. He was always Mr. Laphams favorite because Johnny was the finest apprentice out of the three that were there until Dove, one of the apprentices, passed Johnny a cracked crucible. Johnnys thumb then got grown into his palm when he healed. After the injury, Mr. Lapham and the whole family found Johnny useless and queer (because of his thumb). `Dont touch me! Dont touch me with that dreadful hand! Issanah squealed. After then Johnny grasped the fact that he went from the top to the bottom in a matter of days. It taught him that nothing is forever. Furthermore, Mrs. Lapham a widowed mother of four, was probably the cruelest Lapham of all, after he got crippled. She told him that he was only good for picking rags. She also virtually shooed Johnny out of the house. This made Johnny go find a better life outside of the Laphams shop. It also taught him to be independent. There is usually more than one family that changes a dynamic character like Johnny. The Lyte family also helped Johnny in his transformation. The Lytes are Johnnys rich relatives that claim they are not related to Johnny. Johnny has a silver cup to prove his relation, but the Lytes still deny any relation to Johnny and claim that he stole the cup from them. When Johnny was first looking for a job, he thought he could go to the Lytes and ask for some money. Johnny thought it was his last resort and became dependent on the fact that he is related to the richest merchant in Boston. They disregarded Johnny and even took him to court. Johnny slowly weaned himself off the fact that they were his relatives and became more independent. They also affected Johnny in the very end of the book. The Lytes decide to move back to London because of all the ruckus going on in Boston. Lavinia Lyte (Johnnys second cousin) finally admits to him that he is a relative of the Lytes. He gets to take care of the Lytes estate and he could inherit some money. As one can see the people played a big part in making Johnny a dynamic character. Another key element in his metamorphosis is the events that take place throughout the book. After he burnt his hand Johnny got kicked out of the Laphams house. At first glance, the accident looked like it was going to ruin his life but it in fact, made it better. The incident made him get a job with the Lornes, it involved him in the Revolutionary War, and he met good friends (just to name a few). Although his injury to his hand greatly affected Johnnys life other events also helped Johnny through with his transformation. Distributing newspapers for the Lornes was a big event that changed his life. He was put in charge of delivering newspapers and messages by horseback for the Lorne family, a family who runs the Boston Observer, a newspaper. Before he started delivering he had to learn how to ride a horse. When Johnny learned how to ride a horse it made a big difference.
